Checking suitability of electric motors on frequency inverter

With the help of our MTC2 surge partial discharge (PD) measurement, we have recently gained new experiences.

The question often arises whether low-voltage electric motors fed directly from the mains are suitable for use with variable speed drives. Conventional measurements such as surge test, insulation resistance and resistance measurement do not give a clear picture of the suitability of the electric motor.

The Surge partial discharge gives more information on the quality of the machine and on the possible suitability of the electric motor for frequency converter operation.

The PD measurement already used as standard in LV electric motor production will also find its way into the repair sector in the coming years.

The guidelines we follow with our MTC2 Surge PD are described in the IEC 60034-18-41.
