The MTC2 R7 redefines surge testing

The MTC2 R7 uses the latest hardware combined with advanced .NET Core software. This significantly increases the accuracy of individual test methods and measurement speed. The MTC2 R7 is the high-end instrument for testing windings, coils and armatures — from small coils to generators up to 500 MW.

Patented technology: The surge test operates at a pulse frequency of up to 50 Hz, reducing PD test time by up to 75%. The patented “peak-to-peak” method enables highly sensitive fault detection, even in coils with a large number of series or parallel-connected windings.

Applications

  • Motor service and repair — fault analysis on AC and DC motors, generators and transformers using surge test, resistance measurement and PD analysis
  • Production and end-of-line testing — fully automatic test sequences with automatic phase switching, integrable into production lines via 19″ rack and PLC interface
  • Incoming and outgoing inspection — objectively assess winding quality with patented evaluation methods and automatic GO/NOGO assessment
  • High-voltage applications — test stators, motors and generators up to 50 kV with the stand-mounted enclosure on wheels
  • PD conformity testing — standards-compliant partial discharge measurement (IEC 60034-18) to assess frequency converter suitability
  • DC armature diagnostics — armature testing with optional armature booster for low-inductance DC armatures

Various connection options

The connections on the MTC2 R7 are located on the side for optimal accessibility. Whether you operate the device on a table or standing on the floor, all connections are always easily accessible.

Rack and 19″ version

On the 19″ and rack version, all connections are located at the rear. This makes it easy to integrate the MTC2 R7 into a 19″ rack. For optimal remote control, this version includes a PLC I/O interface as standard. RS232, Ethernet or various fieldbuses (ProfiNET, EtherCAT, ProfiBus) can also be added.

5 test connections

The 5 test leads allow you to access all relevant winding connections simultaneously. The 3 phase connections and the star point (if available) are connected with 4 test leads. The fourth test connection on the star point provides a unique increase in measurement accuracy. The fifth test connection is connected to the stator/motor housing.

Automatic test method switching

After connecting the test object, the MTC2 R7 automatically tests on all 5 terminals. Thanks to the integrated test method switching, there is no need to manually reconnect terminals. Do you typically need more than 4 test connections? The MTC2 R7 can be expanded to a total of 8 test connections + earth.

The surge test

The surge with standard steepness leaves no fault undetected. Modern automatic evaluations simplify fault analysis. The MTC2 R7 enables surge testing with a pulse frequency of up to 50 Hz — particularly noticeable in combination with the PD surge measurement (RPDIV).

Surge partial discharge (PD measurement)

Standards-compliant PD testing can also be integrated. This provides information about critical weak points in the insulation and suitability for use with frequency converters. Two measurement strategies:

  • Motors — measurement with a coupling box in the test lead
  • Stators — measurement using an antenna

Measuring PDIV/RPDIV used to be time-consuming (up to 8.5 minutes for a 3-phase test object). With the patented surge test of the MTC2 R7, this time is reduced by approximately 75%.

Resistance measurement

The resistance test is performed in 4-wire (Kelvin) technology for maximum accuracy. This automatically compensates the resistances in the test leads. The MTC2 R7 records the room temperature (or optionally the object temperature) to compensate for temperature influence. Using Kelvin clamps enables accurate measurement of resistances below 10 Ω.

Software

The MTC2 R7 software has been completely redesigned and is based on modern .NET technology. The 15.6″ touch display enables intuitive operation — even without mouse or keyboard. The test object database provides a complete overview per test object: nameplate data, photos, location information, log book and multiple test plans (incoming, outgoing, type test).

Test results are saved as protocol (PDF), printout or CSV export — compliant with IEC 61934 in 14 languages. Via the network, test plans and results are automatically synchronised between multiple testers.

When to choose the MTC2 R7, MotorAnalyzer or MTC3?

The MTC2 R7 is the surge tester for professionals: maximum measurement accuracy, patented evaluation methods and modularly expandable up to 50 kV. Ideal for repair, production and high-voltage applications.

For portable diagnostics with 10-17 test methods on-site, the MotorAnalyzer 1 and MotorAnalyzer 3 are the better choice. For full production automation with Windows control, automatic test sequences and advanced PLC integration, the MTC3 is the top-tier model.
