5 kV analogue insulation resistance meter MI5500e
The MI5500e is an analogue insulation resistance meter with four test voltages (500 V, 1 kV, 2.5 kV and 5 kV) and a maximum measurement range up to 10 TΩ. The analogue instrument with mirror scale and GUARD terminal is ideally suited for field work on motors, transformers, cables and installations. IP65 protection, built-in rechargeable battery and 2-year warranty. Available exclusively in the Benelux through IONIO.
Why choose an analogue insulation resistance meter?
Experienced technicians prefer analogue insulation meters because the pointer deflection during measurement provides valuable information about the condition of the insulation — something a digital final value does not show. The pointer movement over time reveals whether the resistance is stable, rising (good dry insulation) or falling (moist or damaged insulation). The MI5500e combines this classic analogue measurement method with modern technology: high accuracy, IP65 protection and measurement ranges up to 10 TΩ at 5 kV.
Four test voltages, one instrument
The MI5500e has four selectable test voltages, each with a corresponding maximum measurement range:
- 500 V — maximum 1 TΩ (1,000,000 MΩ)
- 1 kV — maximum 2 TΩ
- 2.5 kV — maximum 5 TΩ
- 5 kV — maximum 10 TΩ
Short circuit current is 1 mA ±2%. Test voltage accuracy is ±2% of the nominal test voltage at R ≥ 1 GΩ. The internal current limiting resistance increases with test voltage (500 kΩ at 500 V up to 5 MΩ at 5 kV), ensuring measurement safety and stability.
Analogue indicator with mirror scale
The analogue pointer has a scale length up to 98 mm with taut band suspension and a built-in mirror. The mirror eliminates parallax errors: by aligning the pointer with its reflection, you always read the correct value regardless of viewing angle. Multiple scale divisions improve accuracy across the full measurement range (accuracy class 2, ±2% of full scale deflection).
GUARD terminal: eliminating surface current measurement errors
The GUARD terminal allows surface currents and parasitic resistances to be removed from the measurement. This is essential when measuring on moist or contaminated surfaces, or when measuring insulation on multi-phase cables where current through adjacent conductors influences the result. Without a GUARD terminal, insulation resistance is systematically underestimated.
Safety and hazard warning
The MI5500e is manufactured in a plastic enclosure with high dielectric strength, compliant with IEC 61010-1. A light indicator warns of dangerous voltage presence — both generated by the instrument itself and present on the object under test. After the measurement, the instrument switches off automatically once the discharge process is complete, making the test object safe to touch.
IP65, battery and field use
With IP65 protection (lid closed), the MI5500e is dust- and waterproof, suitable for outdoor use in harsh weather conditions. The built-in rechargeable sealed lead-acid battery (12 V / 2.3 Ah) provides sufficient autonomy for extended field work. The included charger operates on 110–127 V and 220 V AC supply. The instrument weighs approximately 3.9 kg and measures 274 × 250 × 124 mm including protective case.
