What are the differences between type tests and routine tests?

What is a type test?

A type test is a one-off type test of a product before the product goes into series production.

These tests are usually very comprehensive and are therefore carried out by an accredited laboratory.

Measurements are carried out with regard to mechanical and electrical safety, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) and much more.

What is a routine test

A routine test is, as the name suggests, a 100% test that every product must undergo. Especially for electrical products, a safety test is an absolute must to eliminate any risk of electric shock.

In the various EN / UL / CSA standards, there are clear differences in these measurements, the type test has much more detailed measurements, such as a hot high voltage test, higher current (>30 Amps) grounding measurements leakage current measurements.

Our advice is as follows:

Check carefully with the relevant inspection body what the relevant standards say, do they describe type testing or routine testing?

Have type tests carried out by the relevant testing authority.

Check with IONIO and the inspection body whether the tester offered meets the measurements set in the standard.
