Testing light management today: from DALI to DMX

Modern LED drivers (ECG/EVG) in the luminaire require three layers of control during the end-of-line test:

1. Safety: protective earth, insulation and where necessary HV-AC/HV-DC and leakage current.
2. Functionality: current and power measurement from as little as 1 mA and 1 W, right where LED electronics become sensitive.
3. Communication/parameterisation: reading and writing driver data (e.g. OEM fields such as serial number/order), plus testing protocols (DALI, DSI, DMX, 0–10 V, Touch/Push).

The minimum test procedure for luminaires with light management

Safety measurements

• PE resistance between PE terminal and enclosure (optionally also at 60 Hz).
• Insulation resistance between L1/L2/L3/N/PE and between mains terminals and interface connections.
• Hipot: if required AC (e.g. UL, also at 60 Hz) and/or DC.
• Leakage current (if required, also at 60 Hz).
• Compliance with globally common standards.

Functional tests

• Continuity check of wiring, including dimming lines.
• Current draw from 1 mA and power measurement from 1 W for a realistic picture of behaviour at low loads.

Interface & data

• DALI: read software version and driver status; write/read back OEM data (serial number, order details).
• DSI/DMX/0–10 V/Touch-Push: simulate, address, validate dim curves.
• Cost-efficient when safety, function and interfaces are in one test platform — no extra programming adapters or PC required.

Driver parameterisation

• Write parameters in the driver for project-specific profiles; multi-vendor support.

Visual validation (optional)

• Camera-based check of brightness, light colour and the optical chain (reflectors/diffusers).

IT integration: from traceability to throughput

• Central test plan management and version control.
• Scan serial numbers (barcode/Datamatrix) and automatically label luminaire and packaging.
• Storage of measurement data for audits and statistics.
